The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh today visited Barking and Dagenham to mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of its creation as a London Borough.

Her Majesty, accompanied by His Royal Highness, this morning officially opened Chadwell Heath Community Centre, High Road, Chadwell Heath, and was received by Wing Commander Michael Dudgeon (Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London) and the Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (Councillor Simon Bremner).

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, escorted respectively by the Chairman (Mrs. Anne Estlea) and Mr. L. Farmery (Trustee), viewed activities taking place and met teachers, students and members of clubs who use the Centre.

Her Majesty, accompanied by His Royal Highness, afterwards opened the Kingsley Building at the Sydney Russell School, Parsloes Avenue, Dagenham, and was received by Major Antony O’Hagan (Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London) and the Headteacher (Mr Roger Leighton).

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, escorted respectively by the Headteacher and Councillor Evelyn Carpenter (Cabinet Member for Children’s Services), met the Chairman of Governors and Principals, and Headteachers of nearby schools, before viewing a cycle polo match, language classes and listening to a musical interlude.

Her Majesty and His Royal Highness drove to the Broadway Theatre, Broadway, Barking, this afternoon where The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh appeared on the balcony before being entertained to Luncheon by the Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham for mayors of all London Boroughs celebrating their Fiftieth Anniversaries.

Her Majesty and His Royal Highness afterwards walked to the Abbey Leisure Centre, Bobby Moore Way, Barking, and were received by the Group Manager (Mr Andrew Knight).

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh met members of staff and viewed a swimming display before Her Majesty officially opened the Leisure Centre.

The Queen later arrived at Royal Air Force Odiham, Hook, Hampshire, and was received by Group Captain Richard Maddison (Station Commander) where Her Majesty officially opened the new hangar for The Queen’s Helicopter Flight.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Senior Fellow, the Royal Academy of Engineering, this evening attended the Awards Dinner at the Landmark London Hotel, 222 Marylebone Road, London NW1.
