The President of Ireland and Mrs Sabina Higgins, with the Irish Suite in attendance, left Windsor Castle this morning.

The President and Mrs Higgins later visited the Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-upon-Avon, and were received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire (Mr Timothy Cox), the Chairman (Mr Nigel Hugill) and the Mayor of Stratford (Councillor Diane Walden).

The President and Mrs Higgins toured the theatre and viewed a short performance.

The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins this afternoon visited Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, and were received by the Honorary President of Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust (Professor Stanley Wells) and Dr Diana Owen (Director).

His Excellency and Mrs Higgins toured the house and viewed a display of Shakespeare’s Treasures.

Afterwards The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins were entertained to Luncheon by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire at the Saxon Mill, Coventry Road, Guys Cliffe.

The President and Mrs Higgins later visited Coventry Cathedral and were received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands (Mr Paul Sabapathy), the Dean (the Very Reverend John Witcombe) and the Lord Mayor of Coventry (Councillor Gary Crookes).

The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins afterwards attended an Irish Community Reception at St Mary’s Guildhall, Bayley Lane, Coventry.

The Lord Mayor welcomed The President and Mrs Higgins and His Excellency subsequently delivered an Address to the Irish Community.

The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins then concluded the State Visit to The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Earl Peel (Lord Chamberlain) was present at Coventry Airport later upon the Departure of The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins and bade farewell to His Excellency and Mrs Higgins on behalf of The Queen.

The President and Mrs Higgins this evening attended “Ceiliúradh” (”Celebration”), an Irish Cultural Evening Concert, at the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gore, London SW7, and were received by the Ambassador of Ireland (His Excellency Mr Daniel Mulhall).

The President of Ireland, accompanied by The Duke of York, Colonel-in-Chief, The Royal Irish Regiment (27th (Inniskilling) 83rd and 87th and Ulster Defence Regiment), this morning viewed the Colours of former disbanded Irish Regiments at Windsor Castle.

The President of Ireland and Mrs Sabina Higgins afterwards visited University College Hospital, 235 Euston Road, London NW1, and were received by the Chairman of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Mr Richard Murley) and Professor Katherine Fenton (Chief Nurse, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).

His Excellency and Mrs Higgins, escorted by Sir Robert Naylor (Chief Executive University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), toured the Elderly Medicine Ward and the Hyper Acute-Stroke Unit, and met patients and current and former members of staff and members of the Irish Community who have worked in the National Health Service.

The President of Ireland this afternoon visited the Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1, and was received by the Vice President and Physical Secretary (Professor John Pethica).

The President met research fellows and young scientists to mark the British-Irish Partnership between the Royal Society and Science Foundation Ireland, and viewed items relating to Ireland from the Society’s col- lection.

His Excellency addressed those present.

The President of Ireland this afternoon visited No 10 Downing Street and had talks with the Prime Minister and remained to Luncheon.

The President and Mrs Higgins afterwards attended a Youth Workshop, “Take Charge of Change Together”, incorporating Gaisce – The President’s Award, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the “Being Young and Irish” Campaign at City Hall, London SE1, and were received by the Mayor of London (Mr Boris Johnson), the Vice Chairman of the British Youth Council (Mr Solomon Curtis), the Chief Executive of Gaisce – The President’s Award (Mr John Concannon) and the Chief Executive of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Mr Peter Westgarth).

His Excellency addressed those present and presented special Gold Awards to young people from Northern Ireland as part of Gaisce – The President’s Award and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The Rt Hon Nicholas Clegg MP (Leader of the Liberal Democrats) later called upon The President at Buckingham Palace.

The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins this evening received an Address of Welcome and were entertained at a Banquet by the Rt Hon the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation at Guildhall.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were present.

Mrs Higgins this afternoon visited the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, 62-64 Gower St, London WC1.

Mrs Higgins afterwards gave a Luncheon to celebrate established and emerging Irish Fashion Design at the Embassy of Ireland.

Windsor Castle

The President of Ireland and Mrs Sabina Higgins arrived at Windsor Castle today on a State Visit to The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall welcomed His Excellency and Mrs Higgins on behalf of Her Majesty at the Embassy of Ireland in London and travelled by car to the Royal Dais in Datchet Road, Windsor, where The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins were met by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

The President and Mrs Higgins, accompanied by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, with The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, drove in a Carriage Procession to Windsor Castle with a Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry.

Gun Salutes were fired in the Home Park (Private) by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and from the Tower of London by the Honourable Artillery Company.

A Guard of Honour was provided at Windsor Castle by 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, who later marched past.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery marched past and the Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry ranked past.

Her Majesty’s Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, The Queen’s Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard and the Military Knights of Windsor were on duty.

The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins this afternoon drove to Westminster Abbey where His Excellency laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

The President of Ireland and Mrs. Higgins afterwards visited the Palace of Westminster and were received by the Lord Speaker (the Baroness D’Souza) and the Rt. Hon John Bercow MP (Speaker of the House of Commons).

The Speaker welcomed The President and Mrs Higgins and His Excellency delivered an Address.

The Rt Hon. Edward Miliband MP (Leader of the Opposition) later called upon The President at Windsor Castle.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh gave a State Banquet this evening in honour of The President of Ireland and Mrs Higgins at which The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of York, The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent were present.

The Duke of Edinburgh this afternoon attended the Windsor Sea Cadets Open Day, TS WINDSOR CASTLE, Stovell Road, Windsor, and was received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire (the Hon. Mrs. Bayliss).

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were represented by Dr. Laurence Howard (Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland) at the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Kennedy (formerly Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland) which was held in All Saints Church, Oakham, Rutland, this afternoon.
